John J. Tauss CRPC®
John serves as a managing partner here at Capital Group, Inc., and has more than 20 years of industry experience. He is primarily responsible for overseeing the portfolio management and financial planning facets of our company. He is heavily engaged in market forecasting, manager selection, and due diligence of investment managers and products.
Prior to joining Capital Group, John served as a vice president with American Beacon Advisors where they were responsible for managing a major airline company pension along with distributing mutual funds in equity, fixed income, real estate, ETFs, and private equity to endowments, foundations, corporations, defined benefit plans, institutional investors, and advisors. Because of the stringent risk management and rigorous asset oversight the airline’s pension was overfunded and consequently, it is the only U.S airline not to seek bankruptcy protection to date. This experience served as confirmation to him that it is people with a proven, disciplined process that allow for consistent performance. Like Warren Buffet and other great value managers, John believes in buying great companies at a discount, even cheaply, when others are fearful or the asset is out of favor, in order to potentially make solid returns while taking less risk than the market. His view is that the most important goal is to protect and preserve your capital. The second goal is to create and grow the assets in the most efficient risk-adjusted basis. Then, we will have the ability to focus on distributing the assets in the most tax-efficient way while we are alive and at death, through strong financial planning. Most institutions and endowments use between 30 percent and 60 percent of alternative asset classes in managing risk and performance. John uses a similar approach in managing portfolios. He also utilizes a quantitative and tactical approach in order to help reduce the herd mentality in losses and inversely strives to maximize profits when the market is running. John has gained invaluable experience through working at some of the largest financial companies in the world, such as Transamerica Capital, Prudential financial, Citigroup, and Hartford Financial, where he held vice president positions.
His educational and personal accomplishments have prepared John well for financial services. He has a BS in finance and a second major in accounting from Arizona State University. He is a Chartered Retirement Planning CounselorSM, designee, CRPC® and holds FINRA Series 7, 6, 63, and 65 securities registrations as an investment adviser representative of Commonwealth Financial Network®, member FINRA/SIPC. He was nominated to the National Honors Society, Phi Theta Kappa early in his college years. He also attended the Olympic training center and tried out for the Olympics in 1984. Although he did not qualify for the team, he set a national record during the preliminary tryouts. He was an Arizona State shooting champion for four years and competed at a national level all through high school. He was also one of the youngest shooters ever to shoot a perfect score at an NRA-sanctioned match at the young age of 13. He loves to golf, ski, and spend time with his family. He has five children with his wife Cindy, and they are very active with their education, activities, and community.
